Instruction Manual QR Codes

Printed instructions are expensive, always slightly out of date, and thrown away with the box. An instructions QR code gives people the current version, with photographs, on the phone already in their hand.

What goes on the page

  • Numbered steps, each with its own photograph, so nobody has to interpret a diagram.
  • A video link for the parts that are easier shown than written.
  • The full manual as a PDF, downloadable and replaceable.
  • Questions and answers for the three things everybody rings up about.

Who this is for

Flat pack and assembly, equipment hire, machinery, appliances, cosmetics and supplements with a usage routine, and any product whose support calls all ask the same question.

It pays for itself in support calls

Instructions on paper cannot be improved after they ship. The fifth caller asking the same question is telling you a step is unclear, and with a hosted page you can rewrite that step, add a photograph, and stop the sixth call. Every unit already in the field gets the improvement.

How it works

  1. Write the steps and add photographs from your phone.
  2. Generate the code and put it on the product, the box or a card in the box.
  3. Improve it whenever a support call tells you something is unclear.

Common questions

Can I have instructions in more than one language?

Create one page per language and one code per language, then print the pair. Automatic language detection is on our list.

Will it work in a workshop with no signal?

The page needs a connection to load the first time. It is deliberately tiny, about five kilobytes, so it loads on very poor mobile signal, but it is not offline. Where signal is genuinely absent, keep a printed copy or offer the PDF for download in advance.
